Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday that any US move to seize frozen Russian assets would be “illegal” and an “encroachment on state property and private property.” “This is a collapse of the entire foundation of the world economic system,” Peskov told reporters, according to Reuters. “This is an encroachment on state property and private property. These are illegal actions.” The Russian official also warned that Moscow would “retaliate” if Russian assets were seized, but he did not specify how. “If such measures are implemented, many countries and investors will think 10 times before investing in the US economy or keeping their assets there,” he said. The Kremlin’s warning comes two days after the US House of Representatives approved a $61 billion aid package for Ukraine to counter the Russian invasion. The legislation includes a provision that would allow for the potential transfer of seized Russian assets to Ukraine. The US first floated a plan with the G7 late last year to seize $300 billion in Russian assets. However, the transfer of such assets to Ukraine is far from a done deal, with Western officials citing legal and geopolitical hurdles.
