Bekah Smith claims TikTok saved her life after being in an abusive relationship.

The 34-year-old was in a three-and-a-half-year relationship which she only realised was abusive after starting a TikTok page dedicated to crime.

An avid true crime fan, Bekah decided to set up a profile in May 2023 where she gave her opinions on various criminal cases in the UK. She has since racked up 38,000 followers, reports The Mirror.

It was through her posts that she began to realise her boyfriend's behaviour wasn't normal.

@itzbekahsmithnew KARL DRAPER sentenced yesterday to two years in prison for the three years of hell he put me through. Grateful for the outcome today. Just wish I left sooner. If anyone is in a similar situation I’m only a message. Domestic Violence is everywhere, and there is not enough done to protect the women of our communities. We need to break the stigma that we shouldn’t be afraid to speak our truth, we shouldn’t be afraid to leave, and we shouldn’t let these men control our pasts, presents and futures. #domesticviolence #dvstory #dvawareness #dvsurvivor #endviolenceagainstwomen original sound - Bekah Smith

"He became horrible from the day he moved into my house - there were so many red flags. He isolated me from everyone and tracked me when I went out. He controlled my social media and wouldn't let me post certain things. My friends and family didn't know how bad it was - and neither did I," she said.

Draper repeatedly tried to strangle his partner and she documented the injuries he inflicted on her over several months. The abuse continued throughout her pregnancy.

Despite making numerous videos about the subject on her TikTok account, she never discussed her own experiences of domestic abuse. She now realises this was because she knew she was in one.

However, the confidence she gained from growing her social media following gave her the strength to come forward about her own situation.

He was eventually arrested in September 2023. In February this year, Liverpool Crown Court found him guilty of five counts of assault and one count of coercive control. He was jailed for two years and given a five-year restraining order.

The mum-of-one continues to post on her TikTok page, @itzbekahsmithnew, and said: "My TikTok saved my life.

"I am doing this so no other woman has to go through what I did."
