New asylum applications up 03% to over 85,000 in January in the EU

The number of new asylum applications increased by 3% in January to 85,855, compared to the same month of the previous year, Eurostat announced today, of which 2,655 were unaccompanied minors.

Syrians, with 13,445 new applications, remain the main group of applicants, followed by Afghans (7,185), Turks (6,380) and Venezuelans (6,210).

Also among unaccompanied minors, the main nationality was Syrian (810), followed by Afghan (480).

Germany (26,375), Spain (13,705), Italy (12,920) and France (11,620) continue to be the countries that receive the most asylum applications, representing 75% of the total for the European Union.
