Authorities found the bodies piled on top of each other, naked and with their hands and feet tied with duct tape, near the city of Chihuahua, at kilometer 37 of the road to Ciudad Juárez, on the border with the American city of El Paso, in Texas.
Preliminary reports indicate that all the bodies are male, with injuries caused by firearms. The district attorney's office for the Zona Centro confirmed that some of the victims had their limbs wrapped in plastic and that one of them had a message attached to their chest with a knife, which read "They were going to Magdalena, now they're going nowhere. Chihuahua has an owner, understand that. Welcome!". So far, none of the victims have been identified, according to the prosecutor's office, but authorities expect family members to go to the Public Ministry by the end of the day. The Municipal Police cordoned off the area to allow investigators and experts from the Public Ministry to collect evidence. Elements of the National Guard and the State Attorney General's Office also rushed to the scene. The Legal Medical Service (Semefo) transferred the bodies to the morgue in the capital of Chihuahua, a city of the same name, for later identification. After the bodies were found, authorities found a charred van at kilometer 85 of the road, but have not yet confirmed whether or not it is related to them. With this discovery, the number of people found violently killed in the Mexican city of Chihuahua since the beginning of April rises to 24. The place where the bodies were found is located on a route with a high flow of migrants, who walk 444 kilometers from the city of Chihuahua to Ciudad Juárez to try to enter the United States. Chihuahua ranks fourth in the number of homicides out of the 32 states in Mexico, with 495 murders out of the 7,155 committed nationwide in the first quarter of this year, the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) reported last Tuesday.
