Nationalists and pro-independence parties tied in Basque elections

The Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) was the most voted in today's regional elections in the Basque Country, but it could end up with the same number or even fewer members of parliament than the pro-independence EH Bildu, according to two polls.

Both the PNV, a center-right party currently leading the regional government, and EH Bildu (a platform of leftist independents that includes parties considered heirs to the political arms of the terrorist group ETA) are expected to elect between 26 and 28 deputies to the Basque parliament, according to a poll published by Spanish public television TVE and regional public broadcaster EITB. According to the same study, released after the close of polling stations at 8:00 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. in Lisbon), the PNV won 35.7% of the vote and EB Bildu won 32.9%. The third force was once again the Basque Socialist Party (PSE-EE, the regional branch of the Spanish Socialist Party, PSOE), with 14.3% of the vote and the possibility of electing between 10 and 12 deputies. Also according to the public television poll, the Popular Party (PP, right) won 8.4% of the vote and is expected to elect 7 deputies. The left-wing parties Podemos and Somar mobilized 2.6% and 2.5% of the vote, respectively, and managed to elect up to two deputies in both cases. As for VOX, the far-right party, it is expected to lose the only seat it currently holds in the Basque Country parliament, an autonomous region in northeastern Spain. This study is not an exit poll and presents results from polls conducted over the past five days (when Spanish law does not allow such studies to be published). The results of the public television poll are similar to those of another study, also conducted over the past five days, published by the newspaper El Mundo. In this poll, the PNV emerges as the most voted for and the possibility of electing between 26 and 28 deputies, but EH Bildu, although obtaining fewer votes, has the possibility of winning between 27 and 29 seats in the regional parliament. An absolute majority in the Basque Country is 38 deputies, which neither the PNV nor EH Bildu seem to have a chance of reaching. During the campaign, the socialist candidate, Eneko Andueza, guaranteed that he would only govern with the PNV, considering that EH Bildu had not yet made a full "mea culpa" regarding the past linked to ETA of some of its militants and leaders. The PNV has always been the most voted for in the Basque regional elections and, with the exception of a three-year period between 2009 and 2012, has also always been at the head of the autonomous government. This hegemony is being threatened for the first time in these elections by the growth of EH Bildu. EH Bildu, which has the condemnation of violence with political objectives enshrined in its statutes, was born in 2012, with the end of ETA's activity and in the context of the financial crisis, having assumed itself from the beginning, and consolidated over these 12 years, as a party with social concerns, relegating identity issues or the independence of the Basque Country to a secondary plane. If the polls are confirmed, the PNV and EH Bildu will together win close to 70% of the vote today and the next regional parliament will be the most nationalist in the history of the Basque Country, coinciding with a time when, according to all opinion polls, the desire for independence is at a historic low among Basques. In the current parliament there are 31 deputies from the PNV, 21 from EH Bildu, 10 from the socialists, six from Podemos (far left), one from VOX (far right) and one from Ciudadanos (liberal).
