"The recent achievements by the armed forces have created a sense of glory and greatness about the Islamic Iran in the eyes of the world and global observers," Khamenei said in a meeting with military commanders in Tehran, according to Iranian media. The leader said that "it is important to reduce costs and increase achievements with wisdom and this is what the armed forces have done very well during the recent developments". Khamenei said the issue of how many missiles were fired or how many hit targets in Iran's recent unprecedented attack on Israel is secondary. The main issue is the "emergence of the Iranian nation's and the armed forces' willpower in the international scene and its demonstration," he said, quoted by Spanish news agency EFE. Khamenei was referring to Iran's attack with hundreds of missiles and drones on Israel on April 13. It was the first time Iran had directly attacked Israeli territory, although it caused no major damage despite the spectacular nature of the action. The attack was in retaliation for the bombing of the Iranian consulate in Damascus, which killed seven members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards and which Tehran blamed on Israel. The supreme leader of the Islamic Republic urged the armed forces to continue their efforts to confront the enemy with innovation. "It should not stop for a second, because stopping means going backwards. Therefore, innovation in weaponry and in detecting the enemy's methods should be constantly on the agenda," he said. Khamenei made no reference to Friday's attack on the central province of Isfahan. Tehran said the attack involved three small drones that were shot down, but US officials told the New York Times that Israel had fired at least one missile at Iran. Isfahan province is home to the country's main nuclear facility, Natanz, as well as the airbase of Shekari. Iranian authorities have downplayed the significance of Friday's attack, which, together with Israeli silence, has been interpreted as a de-escalation between the two enemies. Tensions between Israel and Iran have risen significantly since an Israeli military offensive in Gaza that followed an attack by the Islamist group Hamas on Israeli soil on October 7, 2023. Iran backs Hamas, which is designated a terrorist organisation by Israel, the United States and the European Union.
