"May the path of dialogue and diplomacy, which can do so much, prevail," the Pope said in his appeal.

Francis recalled that he prays every day for peace in Palestine and Israel and expressed his desire that "these two peoples cease to suffer".

The Pope also asked that "the martyrs and the suffering of Ukraine" not be forgotten and reiterated the need for negotiations to end the conflicts.

"May the spirit of the risen Lord enlighten and sustain those who work to reduce tensions and encourage gestures that make negotiation possible. May the Lord give leaders the ability to stop for a while to negotiate," he said.

On the sidelines of an event on Saturday, Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin analyzed the current situation of tension between Israel and Iran, stressing his impression that "both sides are trying not to provoke in order to broaden the conflict".

"I think we must avoid everything that could lead to an escalation and, above all, prevent the situation from getting out of control: this happens if there is no commitment from all parties to moderate their positions," he added.

The tension between Israel and Iran has increased significantly since the Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip, which followed the attack by the Palestinian group Hamas on Israeli soil on October 7, 2023, which left almost 1,200 dead.

As a result of the Israeli retaliation offensive in the Gaza Strip, more than 34,000 people, mostly civilians, and the enclave controlled by Hamas plunged into a serious humanitarian crisis.
