Netanyahu says US aid 'defends Western civilization'
The approval of an aid package to Israel by the US House of Representatives today "defends Western civilization", Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

"The US Congress just overwhelmingly passed a much appreciated aid bill that demonstrates strong bipartisan support for Israel and defends Western civilization. Thank you friends, thank you America!" wrote Benjamin Netanyahu on X.
The US House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a $95 billion (€89.1 billion) foreign aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan after it was held up for months by a group of hardline Republican lawmakers.
The $26.4 billion (€24.7 billion) allocation for Israel passed by 366 votes to just 58, and includes funding for missile defence systems as well as the purchase of advanced defence weapons systems.
A further $9.2 billion (€8.6 billion) is earmarked for humanitarian assistance.
The bill now goes to the Senate, where the Democrats have a narrow majority.
The text was approved in the lower house of the US Congress after an alleged Israeli attack on Iran, in apparent retaliation for Tehran’s offensive a week ago, when it launched hundreds of drones and missiles at Israeli territory, most of which were intercepted.
This military action was in turn a response to the bombing of Iranian consular facilities in Damascus on 1 April, which killed several people, including two senior officers in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.
Tensions between Israel and Iran have increased significantly since the Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip, which followed an attack by the Palestinian group Hamas on Israeli territory on 7 October 2023, which left almost 1,200 dead.
The Israeli retaliation offensive in the Gaza Strip has left over 34,000 people, mostly civilians, dead and the Hamas-controlled enclave facing a severe humanitarian crisis.
