Melania Trump plans to attend a fundraiser for the Log Cabin Republicans, a group that advocates for LGBTQ+ members of the Republican Party, on Thursday, according to the Associated Press. The event at the Palm Beach, Florida, estate she shares with the former president is scheduled to be closed to the press but would be her first major political event of the year. Melania Trump has kept a low profile in recent months as her husband seeks a return to the White House in the November presidential election against incumbent President Joe Biden. The former first lady, for example, was absent from Donald Trump’s victory party on “Super Tuesday” last month, a key milestone in the former president’s quest for the Republican nomination. Melania Trump’s reemergence comes as her husband faces a criminal trial over hush-money payments to a porn star with whom he allegedly had an affair. The case against Donald Trump, the first former U.S. president to appear in criminal court, centers on $130,000 in payments that his company made to his then-personal lawyer, Michael Cohen. Cohen then paid the money to porn star Stephanie Clifford, also known as Stormy Daniels, to keep her quiet about an alleged sexual encounter with the billionaire a month before the 2016 presidential election. The Trumps voted together during Florida’s primary election last month. Asked by a reporter if she would be returning to the campaign trail, she replied with a smile, “Stay tuned.” Melania Trump was present at a high-dollar fundraiser at billionaire John Paulson’s Palm Beach home, where she was photographed with her husband in front of the waterfront mansion. The Log Cabin Republicans describe themselves on their website as the “nation’s largest organization representing LGBT conservatives and straight allies who support fairness, freedom, and equality for all Americans.” Melania Trump was a special guest and the recipient of the organization’s Spirit of Lincoln Award at a 2021 dinner held at Mar-a-Lago. In endorsing the former president’s reelection bid in 2020, the Log Cabin Republicans described Trump as having “governed from a place of inclusion,” citing his “commitment to ending the spread of HIV/AIDS” and his initiative to “end the criminalization of homosexuality globally.” Critics, however, frequently note Trump’s record on LGBTQ+ issues. During his presidency, he appointed Supreme Court justices who have been accused of anti-LGBTQ+ bias. Trump also faced criticism in 2017 when he announced that transgender people would be barred from military service. In 2019, he banned U.S. embassies from flying the rainbow flag during Pride Month. Throughout his campaign, Trump repeatedly used language that LGBTQ+ advocates have decried as harmful and demeaning. In campaign speeches, he has threatened to cut federal funding to schools that promote what he calls “transgender insanity” and to hospitals that provide gender-affirming care to minors, and to end any programs that promote sex or gender transition.
