Glaucoma remains one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide. This is the conclusion of a study published in the journal Nature, by the Royal College of Ophthalmology, and which included the participation of Portuguese optometrists and the Association of Licensed Optometry Professionals, a Public Utility Entity.

According to this study, between 2000 and 2020, glaucoma was responsible for 8.40% of cases of blindness, corresponding to 3.61 million blind people, and for 1.4% of visual impairments, corresponding to 4.1 million people.

"Glaucoma is the name given to a set of conditions that are characterized by optic nerve neuropathy. It is often an asymptomatic condition with progressive loss of visual field that is not detected until it is too late. For this reason, it is the most prevalent cause of irreversible visual impairment globally," says Raúl de Sousa, president of APLO, in a statement.

The causes of glaucoma are associated with risk factors already identified, such as a family history of glaucoma, myopia, high blood pressure, and diabetes. "Most people have normal vision for part of their lives, as the prevalence of glaucoma before the age of 35 is low," says Raúl de Sousa.

The person in charge also states that "vision loss occurs more frequently from the age of 40 and can no longer be recovered". For this reason, "early diagnosis is the key to preventing visual impairment. People should have their vision health assessed at least once a year," he concludes.
