The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.11%, the tech-heavy Nasdaq rose 0.10% and the broad-based S&P 500 ended little changed, up 0.02%, according to preliminary results.

All three indexes seesawed between gains and losses throughout the session as investors lacked strong conviction.

"The temptation is to sell into the rally to test the resolve of the buyers," said Patrick O'Hare of Briefing.com.

Investors were also showing "some caution" ahead of earnings from tech giants Meta Platforms, Microsoft and Alphabet as well as key economic data, he added.

On Thursday, a first estimate of US economic growth in the first quarter is due, followed by the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation measure, the PCE price index.

A further rise in bond yields also weighed on sentiment. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 4.64% from 4.60% on Tuesday.

"Investors are digesting earnings," which are coming in thick and fast, "and trying to figure out which companies are still standing tall and which ones are showing signs of weakness," said Bryant VanCronkhite, an analyst at Allspring Global Investments.

"We're in a stock-picker's market, with volatility," he said, a contrast to recent months on Wall Street that were largely driven by macroeconomic data and expectations for monetary policy.
