The Slovenian rider thus tied 'MVDP' in the number of 'Monuments' -- they are the two active cyclists with the most in their records -- leading a lone attack of more than three dozen kilometers to cross the finish line alone, with a time of 6:13.48 hours, leaving the second-placed finisher, the veteran Frenchman Romain Bardet (dsm-firmenich), 1.39 minutes behind.

Winner of the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix this season, Van der Poel did not go beyond third place, 2.02 minutes behind the cyclist from UAE Emirates, the team of the Portuguese João Almeida, who finished in 29th place, 3.52 behind his teammate.

A great battle was expected between Pogacar and the Dutchman from Alpecin-Deceuninck for the victory in the fourth 'Monument' of 2024, however 'Pogi' showed that he is in an extraordinary moment of form, in the run-up to his debut in the Giro d'Italia (May 4 to 26).

In the absence of the two-time defending champion, Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step), recovering from the injuries of the serious fall he suffered in the Tour of the Basque Country, the favoritism fell almost unanimously on 'Pogi', who did not disappoint expectations: the Slovenian attacked 35 kilometers from the finish, in La Redoute -- precisely where the Belgian forged his triumphs in the two previous editions -- and was not caught again, celebrating his second victory in the Belgian classic, after the one achieved in 2021.

"It was a fantastic team effort. I couldn't have done it without them," praised the Slovenian, revealing that he spent the day trying to be cautious, in order to successfully complete the plan laid out for today.

This is the seventh triumph of the season (in 10 days of racing) for the 25-year-old Slovenian, who started with a victory in the Strade Bianche and won the overall in the Tour of Catalonia, and the sixth 'Monument' of his record: besides the two Liège-Bastogne-Liège, he won the Tour of Flanders (2023) and the Tour of Lombardy three times (2021-2023).

For Van der Poel, there is the 'consolation' of having climbed the podium for the first time in this Belgian classic, after having seen his aspirations compromised more than 80 kilometers from the finish, when he was 'cut off' due to a crash that split the peloton in two, and was forced to make an extra effort to rejoin the front group.
