Pimenta, Portela and K2 500-meter world champions at the Olympics

In a statement, the Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP) confirmed the occupation of the places by the athletes who won them at the 2023 World Canoeing Speed Championships in Duisburg, Germany, "after the selective test held this morning at the High Performance Center for the sport in Montemor-o-Velho".
Fernando Pimenta, 34, will be in the Olympic Games for the fourth time, seeking his first Olympic title, after second place in Tokyo 2020 and third in London 2012, then in K2 with Emanuel Silva, in addition to fifth and sixth places in Rio 2016, the latter in K4.
Teresa Portela, 36, arrives at the Games for the fifth time, again in K1 500, as in the Japanese capital, where she achieved her best individual classification, being seventh, a result only beaten by the sixth place achieved in London 2012, in K4 500.
João Ribeiro and Messias Baptista, who, like Pimenta, were crowned world champions in 2023, will represent Portugal in the K2 500 competition, in what will be Ribeiro's third Olympic presence - he was fourth in Rio 2016 in K2 1,000 with Emanuel Silva - and Baptista's second - eighth in K4 500 in Tokyo 2020.
Canoeing has been part of the Olympic program uninterruptedly since 1948, with Portugal, which only debuted in Seoul 1988, having won two medals in the sport, the silver in London 2012, in K2 1,000, by Fernando Pimenta and Emanuel Silva, and bronze, in Tokyo 2020, again by Pimenta, but in K1 1,000.
The Portuguese representation in Paris 2024 in canoeing is reduced to half of those that were in Tokyo 2020 and in Rio 2016, in which there were eight canoeists - including one from slalom.
