Pep Guardiola took advantage of the press conference that followed Manchester City's categorical triumph over Luton Town, 5-1, to come to the defense of Erling Haaland, due to the criticism he has been the target of.

In the opinion piece he signed in the British newspaper The Telegraph, Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool captain, warned the Norwegian international that he will have to rethink his playing style "if he has serious ambitions of winning the Ballon d'Or and playing for Real Madrid", given that his 'scoring streak' will not be enough.

"The goal is not to win the Ballon d'Or. The goal is to win Premier Leagues, Champions Leagues, FA Cups, and League Cups, and he has already done that", he began by stating, in declarations reproduced by British radio talkSPORT.

"Without him, it would not have been possible to win what we won last season. Five titles, without him... Not a chance, impossible. He is a key player for us, and he will improve, due to his age and his desire", he continued.

"More games, more experience, reaching the final stages of competitions... That has never happened in his career. So, this will be his future. And it is not just Erling. Any player, even at 33 years old, can improve", he concluded.
