Rui Costa was quick to react, this Thursday, to the controversy related to the last-minute changes regarding the permission of Olympique Marseille fans to be present at Estádio da Luz, in the Europa League match to be played this Thursday, referring to the fact that the situation "caused unnecessary friction" in a scenario in which the two clubs "were put in a web" of few solutions.

"Unfortunately, both Benfica and Marseille were put in a web in which we had few solutions, but we worked together to reach this outcome. Football without fans makes no sense and makes even less sense when it involves two teams that maintain a good relationship and with the dimension they have worldwide. It made no sense that they could not have fans in the opposing stadiums", he began by saying in statements to BTV, quoted in the newspaper O Jogo.

"From the very beginning, what we always wanted was to have our fans at the Vélodrome next week. The decision came late, but it's good that it came. It caused unnecessary friction, our fans will be able to be in Marseille and, therefore, we will welcome Marseille fans with great pleasure", the maximum leader of the eagles then stressed.

"Football without fans is not football. What was being asked was something that none of us wanted. But it is good that the French authorities managed to reverse a decision that was being too drastic for what is the essence of European football. We are very happy to have our fans in Marseille and also to be able to receive Marseille fans", he added.

It should be recalled that, due to the punishment applied to Benfica by UEFA, due to the bad behaviour of its fans (with a suspended sentence for two years), the club ended up being "formally notified by the French authorities of the prohibition of the presence of fans" in the second leg of the Europa League 'quarter-finals', in Marseille, so it also decided to prohibit the entry of Olympique Marseille fans in the first leg. However, the French authorities allowed, this Thursday, the presence of Benfica fans next week, so the eagles responded in kind and gave the 'green light' to the visiting public approximately four hours before the start of the match.
