Benfica announced, in the form of a statement issued through its official platforms, at the end of Tuesday afternoon, that it was "formally notified by the French authorities of the ban on the presence of fans" in Marseille, for the second leg of the Europa League quarter-finals, scheduled for April 18th, at the Orange Vélodrome.

In this sense, the Luz club says it has already contacted the Portuguese authorities again, who warned – in view of this decision by the Gallic authorities – of the high potential risk regarding the presence of Marseille fans in Lisbon for Thursday's game, given the high "probability of situations of disruption of public order, namely through the perpetration of acts of violence associated with sport involving fans of both clubs, as well as with the Security Forces".

[News in update]

Benfica's statement, in full:

Sport Lisboa e Benfica was this afternoon formally notified by the French authorities of the ban on the presence of Benfica fans in Marseille for the 2nd leg of the Europa League quarter-finals.
Immediately, Sport Lisboa e Benfica contacted the Portuguese authorities again, who warned – in view of this decision by the Gallic authorities – of the high potential risk regarding the presence of Marseille fans in Lisbon for Thursday's game, given the high "probability of situations of disruption of public order, namely through the perpetration of acts of violence associated with sport involving fans of both clubs, as well as with the Security Forces".

In view of this climate of potential risk of insecurity, Sport Lisboa e Benfica decided:

1. To cancel the tickets already issued and purchased by Marseille fans for Thursday's Europa League game, to be held at the Estádio da Luz;

2. To maintain the sale of tickets for Thursday's game only and exclusively to Sport Lisboa e Benfica members with a membership date up to March 21, 2024;

3. In this circumstance, to appeal to Marseille fans not to travel to Portugal and to Benfica fans not to travel to France, in order to avoid potential situations of tension.

Sport Lisboa e Benfica deeply regrets the decision of the French authorities, communicated only today, which undermines the spirit of European competitions, depriving them of the presence of fans, the essence of football, to support their teams when they travel to the opponent's field, in this round of the Europa League quarter-finals.
