'Stellar Blade.' A PlayStation 5 exclusive that should not be underestimated

Even though the ‘fan service’ may put some people off, the pace of the action will please the genre’s great enthusiasts.

The latest PlayStation 5 exclusive hits stores this Friday, April 26th. It's called 'Stellar Blade' and it's developed by Shift Up Corporation, a South Korean studio with experience mainly in mobile games and that certainly had one of its biggest challenges to date in this project.

Fortunately, it seems that Shift Up's ambition paid off and 'Stellar Blade' shows itself as an action game on par with some of the best titles in the genre - especially in this generation of consoles.

PlayStation Portugal sent Notícias ao Minuto a 'Stellar Blade' code, so we spent the last few weeks involved in Eve's adventure and her battle against the monstrous Naytiba.

The plot of 'Stellar Blade' is based mainly on this conflict. In the game, the vast majority of humanity is no longer on Earth and our planet is mostly occupied by the Naytiba, with cities being destroyed and filled with these creatures. It is in an effort to reconquer Earth that Eve and her squadron arrive on Earth, with the protagonist being one of the few survivors after this (impressive) initial sequence.

The plot of 'Stellar Blade' is not much different from many others we have seen and will be especially familiar to fans of 2016's 'Nier: Automata', a game that the producer of 'Stellar Blade' has already assumed to have been a reference in the project. However, the characters in 'Stellar Blade' lack some depth and thematic relevance, with the impeccable design not matching the work that would need to be done from the point of view of the personality itself.

Fortunately, what 'Stellar Blade' does not lack is personality in other aspects, namely in the artistic design of the environments and characters. The futuristic cities and laboratories and the design of the monsters (especially the 'bosses') show the same degree of attention to the products, with 'Stellar Blade' managing to distinguish itself visually from the other titles.

If you've already seen anything about 'Stellar Blade' you've probably noticed Eve's bold suits and risky camera angles. Although it is abundant and often unnecessary, the 'fan service' in relation to Eve never distracts from the action and always manages to stay on the border of what can be considered acceptable by most.

The quality of the graphics is also noteworthy. 'Stellar Blade' uses Unreal Engine 4 as a game engine and, although it fails to implement some innovations in terms of lighting and textures, 'Stellar Blade' focuses entirely on the fluidity of the action with remarkable results.

Players will have the option to play 'Stellar Blade' with three modes: one focused on resolution, another on fluidity and one on the balance between these two. In our experience with 'Stellar Blade', we were inclined to recommend the mode that prioritizes fluidity as it manages to keep the action at a stable 60 frames per second.

Considering the more frenetic and focused nature of 'Stellar Blade', we believe that Shift Up made a good choice and an excellent job with this mode and that, therefore, it should be the choice of action game lovers.

Speaking of gameplay, fans of the genre will find elements in common with the aforementioned 'Nier: Automata' and also with some titles from From Software, especially 'Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

This is mainly due to the importance that blocking an enemy attack at the right time has in 'Stellar Blade'. Depending on the enemy, a certain number of blocks in the right 'timing' will result in a break in posture and thus open up the possibility of an attack capable of inflicting more damage.

In addition, dodging at the right time also puts Eve at an advantage - whether by placing the protagonist behind the enemy or damaging the Naytiba's increased defense. All these actions contribute to 'feeding' the special attack meter, which can be improved by gaining experience acquired by eliminating Naytiba as well as other attributes and combinations of Eve's attacks.

All this may sound very familiar to fans of 'Nier: Automata' and 'Sekiro', with the level design also following part of From Software's formula with the surgical positioning of enemies - which ensures that the player must always be on the lookout for some surprise. Similar to 'Dark Souls' and other games from the Japanese producer, there are certain specific points (camps) where Eve can rest, recover life and healing items in exchange for the repositioning of eliminated enemies.

Although the progression of 'Stellar Blade' is more linear, the areas are large enough to hide items and materials needed to create suits or improve the drone that serves as support and long-range attack. The design will be reminiscent of older games, something that will please some and displease others but that, in the case of 'Stellar Blade', works with the objective intended by Shift Up.

A final note for the soundtrack, which further serves to bring 'Stellar Blade' closer to 'Nier: Automata'. It turns out that the composer of tracks for 'Nier: Automata' and 'Nier: Replicant', Keiichi Okaba, also contributed some themes to 'Stellar Blade'. The effect is the same and deserves praise, with the music filled with choirs that serve as a backdrop to help establish a distinct and pleasant atmosphere.
