TikTok CEO says social media app ‘reflects the same values as the US’
Shou Chew pointed to the freedom of expression that the platform offers to its users.

US President Joe Biden signed legislation last Wednesday, the 24th, which requires the Chinese company ByteDance to sell TikTok in the next nine months. ByteDance has since stated that it has no plans to sell the platform and, in an appeal to the app’s users, TikTok CEO Shou Chew shared a new video on the social network.
“Do not be misled, this is a ban. A ban on TikTok and a ban on you and your choice,” the executive stated in the video. “It is a disappointment, of course, but [the decision] is not a binding order. It is ironic, actually, because the freedom of expression on TikTok reflects the very American values that make the US a beacon of freedom.”
Shou Chew also stated that TikTok “is not going anywhere” and added that the company “will continue to fight for our rights in the courts.” You can watch the full video above.
