Miranda Sarmento was speaking in the debate on the Stability Programme (PE) 2024-2028, in response to criticism from the PS, who asked him about which electoral promises the Government would drop by having resigned from presenting its own macroeconomic scenario in the Stability Programme.

"No electoral promise made in the AD programme will fail to be fulfilled", said Miranda Sarmento, emphasising that by implementing the reduction in IRS rates (whose proposal is also being debated today by parliament) and the emergency plan for health, "the essential" of the remaining measures "will start in 2025".

Noting that the Government has opted to revise downwards the forecast of budget surplus for 2024, the vice-president of the PS parliamentary group, António Mendonça Mendes, also pointed to the tax burden, emphasising that the forecasts of the Government led by Luís Montenegro predict a more modest decline in the tax burden.

"For several years, the alpha and omega of your intervention [as an opposition deputy] has been the tax burden", observed Mendonça Mendes, to criticise the decline in the reduction.

António Filipe, from the PCP, and Isabel Mendes Lopes, from the Livre, also criticised the fact that this PE does not include the measures that the current Government intends to implement.

"Either the Government has a magic trick up its sleeve to change this scenario or it is trying to find excuses for not fulfilling the promises it made in the electoral promise", stressed António Filipe.

"Our policies start now, for four and a half years and it will be this medium-term programme that we will work on to adjust our measures", replied the Minister of Finance.
