In statements to journalists in parliament, Fabian Figueiredo considered that the ongoing negotiations to lower the proposals on the IRS to the specialty, without voting in general, once again demonstrate the "right-wing shambles".

According to the parliamentary leader of the Left Bloc (BE), parliament is only debating and voting on these proposals today because the Government asked the Assembly of the Republic to deliberate in this regard.

"And today it is making a request to lower it to the committee. We think this is wrong and will not follow this new episode, this new confusion and shambles of the right-wing", he criticised.

Fabian Figueiredo thus appealed to all parties to ensure that the proposals they presented on the IRS are "not only debated today, as planned, but also voted on, in the name of clarity, of transparency of parliamentary work".

"The fact that they are being voted on today does not presuppose a specialty work in which there could be a convergence of positions and a meeting of the various proposals. Quite the contrary, it means that today the order of business is being fulfilled as planned", he stressed.

Fabian Figueiredo stressed that the BE "is not available to lower its proposals to the specialty without a vote" and also added that it will vote against the proposal presented by the Government, which he considered "disproportionate, regressively biased" and that "reduces the progressiveness" of the Portuguese tax system.

The parliamentary leader of the BE recalled that the party presented two proposals on this matter, one of which provides for an update of the value of the specific deduction by 582 euros, guaranteeing a reduction "for all taxpayers of the expense in terms of IRS".

The other proposal, he continued, "provides that all home loan contracts from now on can deduct their expense in terms of IRS".

"Since the 2012 State Budget, only contracts prior to that budget could see their interest deducted in terms of IRS. We propose that this value be updated to 360 euros and extended to all taxpayers", he said.

Parliament is discussing this afternoon the proposal of the PSD/CDS-PP Government that changes the IRS rates, with all opposition parties presenting their own initiatives, the outcome of the votes being uncertain, taking into account the balance of power in the Assembly of the Republic.
