In statements to Lusa, Fernando Curto said that "he does not want two-speed professional firefighters".

The official spoke before the start of the 3rd edition of the Azores Regional Firefighters Meeting, organized by the National Association of Professional Firefighters, which is taking place from today on the island of Pico.

"We have to have a career that allows us to respond effectively and promptly to the risk to life and property of the populations", said Fernando Curto.

The leader reiterated the need for firefighters in the Azores to benefit from a risk allowance, a topic that will also be addressed at the meeting on the island of Pico.

The event brings together professional firefighters from various corporations in the Azores, highlighting the organization, among the main topics under discussion, the status of professional firefighters and working conditions, the allocation of risk allowances and the financing of associations.

PAN/Açores submitted a document to the Regional Legislative Assembly on 8 April, which aims to create the Statute for Professional Firefighters in the Azores so that the profession is "more attractive and respected".

According to a PAN statement, issued at the time, the proposal aims to officially recognise the profession of firefighter "as a profession of risk and rapid wear and tear, imposing the payment of a supplementary remuneration for the respective risk, as well as the anticipation of the retirement age".
