Ministry explains that closing schools in August does not change vacations
The Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation (MECI) clarified today that the possibility of schools closing for a week in August does not imply a change in the holidays of teaching and non-teaching staff.

In August, schools will be able to close their doors, in coordination with the respective local authority, for one week between August 12 and 23, according to an order published last week, in which the MECI refers to the need to "compensate for the intensity and demand of the tasks" in the final stretch of the school year.
The decision maintains a practice created by the previous executive, but raised doubts for some workers who are being asked to change their vacations to accommodate the suspension of activities.
In a statement, the Union of All Education Professionals (Stop), which reported the situation, states that, "as the minister gave autonomy to schools (in coordination with the chambers) to apply the guidelines of the order, this is allowing great injustices in its application and questioning the conciliation of professional, personal and family life of education professionals".
Questioned by the Lusa agency, the office of Minister Fernando Alexandre clarifies that "the eventual suspension of activities is not related to the enjoyment of vacations by teachers and non-teachers, nor does it change the respective regime".
"In the case of non-teaching staff, (the suspension) will also have to be coordinated with the local authorities, so that schools make the decisions they consider most appropriate to safeguard the correct functioning of the services", adds the guardianship.
The order emphasizes that schools must, however, ensure any activities related to final tests and national final exams.
