Catholic Church highlights the role of the poorest and most isolated mothers
The Episcopal Commission for the Laity and Family defended today that "all mothers have the right to everyone's support", highlighting the effort made by "the poorest, the loneliest, those who have to be both mother and father".

"How can we not admire mothers who had to face all the difficulties without the responsible and committed presence of their fathers? How can we not value mothers who through adoption gave life to children who are not biological but of the heart? How can we not praise the heroism of mothers who, due to the death of their spouse or partner, faced the upbringing and education of their children alone?", asks that committee.
This body is chaired by the bishop of Bragança-Miranda, Nuno Almeida, in a message about Mother's Day, which is celebrated on May 5th.
For this body of the Portuguese Episcopal Conference, "in times of fragile peace or even of countries at war", "all mothers in territories exacerbated by violence, in refugee camps, in emergency escapes, in forced migration and, even worse, in mourning for children lost in this inhuman context" should be remembered "with intense solidarity".
Also, on an occasion that marks the 50th anniversary of April 25th, the committee chaired by Nuno Almeida appeals to mothers to renew "values of respect, tolerance and peace, and (...) continue to defend the dignity of each human being in the richness of their differences and in the diversity of their races, cultures, creeds and talents".
The Episcopal Commission for the Laity and Family has the purpose of accompanying associations of the faithful in the area of the Apostolate of the Laity and promoting Pastoral care in the areas of the Family, Youth and Higher Education.
