Prime Minister Luís Montenegro gave a press conference this Friday after a meeting with the President of Angola, João Lourenço.

"Our intention is to strengthen commercial relations between Portugal and Angola, giving Portuguese companies the conditions to increase their activity in Angola and also providing Angolan companies with equal opportunities in Portugal", stated Montenegro.

The Head of Government stressed that there were Portuguese companies in the most varied areas operating in Angola, and that this situation was to continue. "We are very interested in continuing to follow this common path", he added.

Montenegro also thanked João Lourenço for his friendship and cooperation, at a time when they are looking not only at what the two countries have done together, "but at what they are still going to do". "It is with the future in mind, the well-being of Angolans and Portuguese, that we receive and welcome you today, in the hope that the stronger our relations are, the more productive they will be for the quality of life of our peoples", he said.

After the Prime Minister's statements, it was João Lourenço's turn to speak. The Angolan leader stressed that he had already spoken with Luís Montenegro, when the country gave the victory to the Democratic Alliance, but that Luanda now understood it to be "a good opportunity" for a first meeting between the two.

"The two delegations worked and I reiterate what the Prime Minister has just said. We agreed to hold the intergovernmental joint commission in Lisbon, a commission that will, among other things, prepare Prime Minister Luís Montenegro's visit to Luanda", he explained, stating that, "if possible", the visit could take place in July.

The President of Angola is in Portugal within the scope of the 25th of April commemorations, having met with his Portuguese counterpart, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, on Thursday.

João Lourenço was part of a panel of Lusophone Heads of State who met with Marcelo, and also gave a conference on Thursday at the CCB, during which the Carnation Revolution was the theme. Upon arriving at the venue, the Angolan President was criticised by a dozen demonstrators who considered him a "dictator and anti-democrat".
