The general secretary of the Independent Union of Physicians (SIM), Nuno Rodrigues, said this Friday that he asked the Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins, that the negotiation protocol be "concluded by the end of the year", stressing that it should be "transparent and bring peace of mind".

"It was the first meeting to introduce the Minister of Health. At least we managed to formalize the scheduling of the negotiation protocol, which must be shorter than the one given to the previous government," Nuno Rodrigues began by telling journalists, after the meeting with the minister, adding that the union asked that the protocol be "concluded by the end of the year".

According to Nuno Rodrigues, the protocol should be "transparent and bring peace of mind" to physicians so that they "know what they can count on". "A calendar was defined. On our part, we delivered a list of demands and also delivered proposals to increase the accessibility of healthcare for the Portuguese," he added.

Regarding the salary increase, the general secretary indicated that the minister reiterated that "the State's financial capacity will be assessed" and that the union is willing for the measure to be "phased in".

"The Minister of Health was a person of dialogue and with a desire to solve problems," he added.

The Minister of Health began meeting this Friday, for the first time, with the unions representing physicians, nurses and pharmacists, starting the salary negotiations demanded by the union structures.
Salary increases, better working conditions and career progression are some of the demands that the unions had been demanding from the previous ministerial team and that they will once again bring to the negotiating table with the new government.

SIM's demands include restoring the 15% salary increase for physicians by 2026, completing the interim agreement reached with the previous government, and career progression.
