The Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins, will meet this Friday for the first time with the representative unions of doctors, nurses and pharmacists, starting the salary negotiations demanded by the union structures.

Next to the Ministry of Health, Joana Bordalo e Sá, president of the National Federation of Doctors (FNAM) told reporters that she expects the negotiation to take place "seriously, honestly, without behind-the-scenes games and that it will not last 19 months", stressing that "we need quick answers for the National Health Service (NHS).

"Health cannot wait at all and, therefore, above all, we came with good faith, with solutions for the various matters", she said, recalling that doctors in Portugal continue to be "among the worst paid in Europe".

The official also recalled that for the FNAM "it was never just a salary issue" and therefore understands that the previous agreement "was not a good agreement for doctors, so much so that it did not allow more doctors to be hired in the NHS".
