The "Safe Pilgrimage - Fátima 2024" campaign includes "direct awareness-raising actions with the pilgrims", taking into account that the roads they use "have significant road traffic, where high speeds are practiced, substantially increasing their exposure to risk, as well as the seriousness of a possible accident, being essential the adoption of routes on alternative roads and with less road traffic".

In a statement, IP reveals that "in order to minimize the occurrence of incidents, alternative routes were created in places with greater road traffic, as well as a set of road conditions implemented on the main routes used by pilgrims to access the Sanctuary of Fátima".

According to Infraestruturas de Portugal, an alternative from IC2 to the old National Road 1 will be implemented until May 13, in the Fornos area, Coimbra, the same happening between Antanhol and Cernache.

In the district of Leiria, the right-hand lane will be closed on the IC2 in several sections.

The pilgrimage of May 12 and 13 to the Sanctuary of Fátima will be presided over by the archbishop of Barcelona, cardinal Juan José Omella.

Omella presided over the Spanish Episcopal Conference until the beginning of March this year, when he was replaced by Luis Javier Arguello Garcia, archbishop of Valladolid.
