In the final arguments of the trial taking place in Portimão, in the district of Faro, the public prosecutor requested a 14-year prison sentence for Tiago Souto, 22 years old, in preventive detention for the crime of attempted aggravated murder.

"A severe punishment is what is required" alleged the public prosecutor in court, considering that the defendant struck two blows with a knife to Joana Nascimento's neck "with the intention of killing her".

The facts date back to 15 June 2023, when the man waited for his ex-girlfriend, 26 years old, to leave work and, when she was inside her car, struck her twice in the neck with a knife.

Joana Nascimento received hospital treatment and was discharged on the same day, but was readmitted on 22 June to the Hospital de Portimão with a serious infection caused by the injuries.

The victim was transported by helicopter to the Hospital de Santa Maria, in Lisbon, where she died on the night of the 23rd, as a result of a post-traumatic abscess, complicated by sepsis (generalized infection), according to the autopsy report.

For the public prosecutor, the aggressions occurred because the defendant "never accepted the end of the relationship" that the victim did not want to continue, acting with a feeling of possession and dominance.

The prosecutor considered that it was proven in court that the defendant "with considerable" criminal record "struck the blows with the knife with the intention of killing", not having shown, during the hearings, any signs of regret.

During his speech, the public prosecutor requested that violent relationships and behaviors be denounced promptly and as quickly as possible, so that they can be punished exemplarily by the courts.

The prosecuting attorney also requested an effective prison sentence for the defendant, considering that he "acted with intent and with the intention of killing", knowing that the result would be that by hitting Joana in a sensitive area of the body, the neck.

The representative of the victim's family also requests compensation of 60 thousand euros.

The defense attorney requested the acquittal of the defendant, considering that there is not enough evidence for a conviction, alleging that the witnesses heard in court had no direct knowledge of the facts, but only from the victim's account in the days leading up to her hospitalization.

The reading of the judgment was scheduled for May 6, at 1:30 pm, in the Court of Portimão.
