Court staff strike sees suspects freed

At least 12 detainees will be released today in the Lisbon metropolitan area due to the strike by judicial officers, involving cases of homicide, domestic violence and drug trafficking, according to a source from the Union of Judicial Employees (SFJ).

The same source told Lusa that there is a murder suspect who will be released because he cannot be brought before an examining magistrate for the first judicial interrogation within 48 hours. The same happens in relation to five other drug trafficking suspects who have already been released, four of whom were caught with drug 'balls', and who were allegedly 'drug couriers'.

There is also another detainee - whose alleged crime has not been identified - who had to be released in Cascais and five more detainees suspected of domestic violence who are also being released for the same reason: two in Lisbon, two in Sintra and one in Seixal.

"The April 25 holiday was between two strikes without minimum services and the detainees who end the 48-hour period between these three days [Wednesday, Thursday and Friday] exhaust the period before the Saturday morning shift at the Central Criminal Investigation Court" [also known as Ticão], he said.

The same source admitted that "perhaps more situations like this will occur until the end of the day and on Friday".

"Normally there are no shifts on holidays. The courts may have judges there at Ticão or at the Cascais examining court, but they do not have the staff," he summarized.

According to the same source from SFJ, today's strike, which was accompanied by demonstrations by these professionals in several cities in the country, will have reached "90% of adherence" nationwide.

In the Algarve, for example, the adherence to today's strike by court officials is above 70%, with the courts of Faro and Olhão being closed.

The regional leader of the Algarve of the SFJ, Aniceto Massa, said that the paralysis in most courts "is very significant, operating practically in minimum services".

According to Aniceto Massa, the proceedings with defendants in custody are being directed by the courts that are closed to the Court of Portimão, "where there is strong adherence, but with officials working in the criminal examining court".

In Aniceto Massa's opinion, the adherence to today's strike "is not greater, because the salary that court officials receive is so scarce and poor that it is a significant effort to make two consecutive days of strike".

"Although people are willing to strike, it is not easy to manage the family budget afterwards. I am convinced that on Friday the adherence will be 100% in the Algarve," he concluded.
