Questioned by the Lusa agency, this city council of the Lisbon district clarified that the northern cliff presents a "high risk" of collapse in a 60-meter stretch.
"The most significant earth movement occurred about three weeks ago" and "has not yet stabilized," added the local authority.
Given the instability of the northern cliff of the beach, the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) and the Municipal Civil Protection ordered "for an indefinite period" the prohibition of northern pedestrian access for safety reasons.
Violation of the ban is punishable by a fine of between 30 and 100 euros, which may be increased to 300 euros in the case of an entity.
The local authority clarified that access to the beach is not in question, since the main access is made in the southern zone, which connects the car park to the beach support and the supervised bathing area.
Taking into account the approach of the bathing season, no other action is planned beyond the ban and the respective warning signs.
The instability of the cliff is being monitored by the municipality and the APA, which may come to adopt other solutions that involve geotechnical stabilization works.
