The Food and Economic Safety Authority (ASAE) warned, this Wednesday, about the existence of scams carried out by fake inspectors, mainly in the Baixo Alentejo region, in a statement sent to Notícias ao Minuto.
According to ASAE, the suspects seek to collect, for their own benefit, payments or advantages that are not due to them, in a practice that has been adopted for several months now and at a national level, "by illicit means and using fictitious situations".
As a rule, the method used by the false inspectors "involves notifying economic operators of a hypothetical administrative offense, immediately demanding the payment of a fine, usually by bank transfer or ATM reference, under threat of a subsequent additional measure aggravated by the closure of the establishment".
In other situations, the same note adds, "the practice of resorting to filling out inspection forms to simulate inspection actions and subsequently being notified of the hypothetical administrative offense was detected".
According to ASAE, "these are fraudulent attempts to obtain illegitimate profits and privileges, through the usurpation of powers and functions of an authority, so economic operators should not, under any circumstances, follow this instruction".
The inspectors also explain that, regardless of the content of the information communicated, the notifications for payment of administrative offenses by ASAE are always made in accordance with the formal and legal requirements, so economic operators should never make a direct payment of any amount.
