"I don't remember that stabbing", said to the panel of judges of the Judicial Court of Leiria the defendant, 41 years old, who is being tried for the crimes of domestic violence, ill-treatment, attempted murder and possession of a prohibited weapon.

The case dates back to March 31, 2023, when the PSP was called to a domestic violence situation at a residence in Leiria, according to the indictment of the Public Ministry (MP).

Among other aspects, the MP described that when the defendant and his partner were in the bedroom, she "called for her daughter, asking for help", and told her that "the defendant wanted to kill her".

After the daughter entered the bedroom, the suspect, a foreigner, pushed her "with force, causing her to fall onto the bed, breaking it", and punched the woman in the face, ending up being held by his nephew and allowing the victims to take refuge in another room.

In this room, the woman's nephew leaned his body against the door, from the inside, to prevent the defendant from entering, who, in the meantime, went to get an iron and returned to the bedroom, asking the woman and daughter to leave, "continuing to announce that he was going to kill" his partner and break his daughter's legs.

After the woman contacted the PSP, when they arrived at the scene, the police told the defendant - who, in the meantime, had gone to get two knives - to leave and drop them, but he "not only did not comply with the order, staying inside the house, but also told the police officers that he would kill them if they entered".

When he left the residence, the defendant was holding "a knife in each hand" in the direction of the officers, and one of the police officers used pepper spray to neutralize him, reported the MP, adding that the suspect fled home, but returned shortly afterwards, and when approached by the same officer, struck him.

The PSP officer was transported to the Leiria hospital and, in the early hours of the following day, transferred to a hospital unit in Coimbra, from where he was discharged on April 3.

On the 18th of the same month, the police officer was admitted to the emergency department of the Coimbra University Hospital and University Center following a pulmonary infarction originating from "injury to the right great saphenous vein by a bladed weapon", where he remained hospitalized until the 27th.

In court, the man, who was in preventive detention, denied having assaulted and threatened to kill his partner or that he was going to break his daughter's legs.

"I wasn't going to hit them, I was going to talk," he said, acknowledging that on that day he had "drunk a lot of whiskey and wine" and that he started drinking "about five, six years ago".

The suspect also assured that when he went to get two knives from the kitchen it was not to "harm" the police officers, but "to cut his wrists".

"It was for me, not to do harm," he said.

The defendant also denied telling the police officers that he would kill them if they entered the house, claiming that he was hit with "a truncheon on the head" and "pepper spray in the face", not remembering what happened afterwards.

"I don't know [how the police officer got injured]", he said.

In this morning's session, at the request of the Public Prosecutor, the court ordered the extraction of a certificate to open a criminal investigation for alleged false statements made by the defendant's partner, who was constituted as an assistant, given the discrepancies with statements previously made.

Also in the morning, the court began to hear the 43-year-old PSP officer who was injured, also an assistant in the process, who continues to be followed by several medical specialties.

The hearing continues in the afternoon.
