The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, sent condolences to the family of journalist Pedro Cruz, who died this Sunday, at the age of 53.

"The President of the Republic regrets the death of Pedro Cruz, a friend and renowned journalist who elevated the profession so much throughout his career, and offers his deepest condolences to his family at this difficult time", reads a published note on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic.

In the same message, he revealed that, "not being able to attend the funeral tomorrow", he will be represented by the Mayor of Póvoa de Varzim.

Born in Póvoa de Varzim, Pedro Cruz began his career at the age of 21, in local radio stations, but gained prominence in the service of SIC, where he worked for more than two decades and held the positions of coordinator of the Porto newsroom and deputy director of information.

The areas of politics and international affairs were those he followed most closely, having been present in various situations of conflict and international tension, namely Kosovo, Syria, Albania, Haiti, Lebanon and, more recently, Ukraine, where he was sent in the first weeks of the Russian invasion.

Pedro Cruz's wake will take place today, from 11 pm, in Aveleda (Vila do Conde) and the funeral will take place on Monday, at 4 pm, in the Igreja Matriz da Póvoa de Varzim.
