Saveliev was previously an auditor at the Accounts Chamber of Russia, while General Sadovenko had been serving in the ministry headed by Shoigu since January 2013, who now holds the post of secretary of the Russian Security Council.

The dismissal of Shoigu, who had been at the helm of the ministry for more than a decade, came two days after the arrest of a senior Defence official on suspicion of corruption.

This is the second corruption investigation launched by the Russian authorities at the top of the Defence Ministry in less than a month.

Previously, and on the same charges, Deputy Minister Timur Ivanov, considered very close to Shoigu, was arrested.

On 14 May, President Vladimir Putin signed the decree confirming economist Andrey Belusov as the new Defence Minister.

Belusov, 65, had been serving as the government's number two since January 2020, where he was also responsible for the manufacture of 'drones' and radio-electronic warfare equipment.

Putin estimated today that Defence and Security spending for 2024 will be around 8.7% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and justified the appointment of Belusov with the need to manage these important resources and modernise the Armed Forces and the military industry.

The Russian leader assured that the Army is improving its positions on the front "daily", so there will be no changes in the general staff of the Armed Forces.
