This system will be “deployed in units of the Korean People’s Army (...) between 2024 and 2026,” KCNA said.
On Friday, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un oversaw a test of the rocket system, calling for a “technical upgrade” after an initial test in late April.
Kim said he wanted to “put the production of this new weapon system on a solid footing” and also announced “an important change” to “drastically increase the combat capability of the artillery units of the Korean People’s Army,” without providing further details, KCNA said.
Pyongyang said eight projectiles “accurately hit the target,” demonstrating “the destructive power of the upgraded 240-mm multiple rocket launcher system.”
South Korea’s defence ministry told AFP it was unable to confirm the North’s tests.
In February, the regime said it had developed a new guidance device for its 240-mm multiple rocket launchers.
The announcement of the latest drills comes as observers have warned that Pyongyang is likely testing new weapons and ramping up production of artillery shells and cruise missiles, amid speculation it could send them to Russia for its war in Ukraine.
South Korea and the United States have accused North Korea of supplying weapons to Moscow, despite UN assessments that it is banned from doing so.
