A climber is dead and another was seriously injured after falling 1,000 feet (305 meters) on Mount Johnson in Alaska on Thursday, U.S. officials said. The accident was witnessed by other climbers who called for help around 10:45 p.m. The group skied down to the victims and confirmed that one of the men had died, and dug a snow cave to shelter the injured climber, ABC News reported. A helicopter was able to reach the site on Friday and airlifted the injured climber, who was taken to a hospital for further treatment. The helicopter returned to the site later to recover the body, but was unable to complete the mission because of deteriorating weather conditions. Officials said they would resume the recovery operation when weather permits. The fall occurred on a route known as "The Escalator," which involves steep rock, ice and snow.  Also Read: 19-year-old dies after avalanche on mountain in Austria, 1 injured (Portuguese version)
