Hundreds of homes have been destroyed after a series of tornadoes ripped through the US city of Omaha, Nebraska, on Friday. Almost 10,000 people are still without power.

The city was hit by several tornadoes but the strongest hit the north-western suburbs, which are home to more than 485,000 people, Sky News reports. Most of the damaged homes are in the Elkhorn area, where police and emergency crews have been going door-to-door to check on people trapped in the wreckage.

Pat and Kim Woods, who live in Elkhorn, said they took shelter as the tornado passed about 200 yards from their home. "We could hear it. When we came upstairs, our fence was gone and we looked to the northwest and the whole neighborhood was gone," Mr Woods said.

While many homes were completely destroyed, others were left untouched. There were no reported fatalities, although several people suffered minor injuries. "People had warning and that saved lives," said Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer.

One of the tornadoes passed close to the city's airport, which was forced to close for almost an hour. Passengers were sent to shelters and some airport buildings were damaged.

A building where about 70 people were sheltering collapsed, and several people had to be rescued from the rubble.

The National Weather Service has issued several tornado warnings for the US states of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.
