After month trapped (and losing her mother), orca frees herself from lagoon

The mother of a two-year-old orca died the day the pair became trapped in a lagoon in Canada. The calf managed to survive with the help of a 50-person team and, after failed rescue attempts, the tide came in "just enough."

A story of a baby orca that seemed "destined" for a bad ending took a dramatic turn Friday when it managed to free itself from a remote lagoon on Vancouver Island in Canada.

According to international publications, it was early this morning that the two-year-old animal managed to free itself from the site after the tide rose.

Faced with the phenomenon, the orca managed to swim under a bridge, which, according to the press, was serving as a barrier to its escape to the high seas - which today came to fruition.

This animal's journey began over a month ago, on March 23, when the calf and its mother became trapped at the site. The mother died that day and, for weeks, all efforts to free the surviving member were unsuccessful.

The situation led Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to consider the situation "heartbreaking".

Rescuing the animal was difficult to carry out given its size and location, and officials had already tried to make vocalizations for the animal to go to sea and also place ropes with buoys - alternatives that were not fruitful.

The animal remained at the site for weeks, being fed by a team of about 50 people, who were always committed to its rescue.
