Fire in guesthouse causes ten deaths and 11 injuries in Brazil

A fire in a boarding house killed ten people and injured 11 in Porto Alegre, in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, on Friday. According to the local authority, the site received people in a situation of social vulnerability and had 30 people staying at the time of the incident.

The fire alert was given at 2:00 am local time on Friday (6:00 am) in Lisbon and the flames were extinguished about three hours later. When they entered the building, firefighters found two victims on the first floor, five on the second and three on the third, revealed G1.

Eleven people were rescued alive, two of whom were in serious condition.

The causes of the fire are still being investigated, but the Civil Police said that no evidence of a crime was found. Apparently, the fire started in a room and a resident tried to put it out with a mattress, which hit a wooden wall and spread.

The president of Brazil, Lula da Silva, expressed "sadness and concern" over the death of ten people in a boarding house in Porto Alegre. "The establishment welcomed people in a situation of vulnerability in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. My solidarity to the families and friends who lost their loved ones", he wrote on the social network X.
