Venâncio Mondlane's mandate was terminated on Wednesday in a meeting of the Municipal Assembly, which argued that the politician did not participate in the inauguration and never attended the body's sessions.
"Losing a mandate for being in a fraudulent assembly is even meritorious. I wish I could lose a thousand mandates of this type of fraudulent mafia bodies. I am not afraid at all and have nothing to comment on because I am not part of a body that is the product of the theft of the popular will," said Venâncio Mondlane, quoted today by the media. In total, 71 members are part of the municipal assembly of the Mozambican capital, of which 37 are from the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), 30 from the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) and four from the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM). Venâncio Mondlane, a forestry engineer and member of parliament, is 49 years old and was the head of the Renamo list in the October 11 local elections, a poll in which the politician claims victory, although Razaque Manhique, from the ruling party (Frelimo), was declared the winner. In the last local elections, Mondlane once again tried to "rescue Maputo", as he put it in his slogan, after being defeated in the 2018 poll with 36.43% of the votes, against 56.95% for the Frelimo candidate, at the time the veteran Eneas Comiche. After the announcement of the results by the National Elections Commission (CNE), Mondlane led more than 50 protest marches, with some episodes culminating in clashes between Renamo supporters and the police forces, with some people being arrested and others injured. Frelimo, the ruling party, now governs in 60 of the 65 municipalities, following the results of the October poll, strongly contested by the opposition and civil society. Renamo claims victory in the country's largest cities, including Maputo, based on the parallel count through the original minutes and edicts, but was declared the winner in only four municipalities, half of what it had previously, while the MDM, the third political parliamentary force, maintained the municipality of Beira.
