Several shells hit Wanma Thu hospital, where another 15 people were seriously injured, according to several witnesses who said the attack came as the military tries to retake lost territory in the northwest of the country.

A volunteer from the rescue team told the DPA news agency that six shells were fired from the vicinity of the hospital overnight.

Myanmar (formerly Burma) has been in turmoil since the military seized power in a coup in February 2021.

The shadow National Unity Government declared a "people's defensive war" against the junta in September 2021, urging citizens across the country to rise up.

The military has since faced an offensive by ethnic armed groups that have seized territory in some towns near the borders with India, China and Thailand.
