Calle de Ferraz, in the Spanish capital of Madrid, was divided on Thursday night into two demonstrations: one in support of the country's prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, and another calling for his resignation.

The cause is the recent controversy involving the Spanish leader's wife, Begoña Gómez, who is being investigated following a complaint for alleged influence peddling.

According to the news agency Efe, hundreds of people gathered on the street where the headquarters of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) is located, at 8:00 pm local time (7:00 pm in Lisbon), which led the Spanish National Police to close the street.

Data from the Government Delegation indicate that about 350 people expressed support for Sánchez, while 150 were calling for his resignation with chants such as "PSOE, traitor, neither a worker nor a Spaniard", "Sánchez to prison", "Pedro Sánchez, resign, the people do not support you" and "no to the coup d'état".

At issue are alleged connections between Begoña Gómez and private companies, such as the airline Air Europa, which received public support during the pandemic crisis or signed contracts with the State when Sánchez was already prime minister.

On Thursday, the Spanish Public Prosecutor's Office requested the dismissal of the investigation, considering that the complaint that originated it has no basis.

The announcement of the opening of this "preliminary investigation", on Wednesday, by a Madrid court, led Pedro Sánchez to state that he is considering leaving office, promising a public statement about his future next Monday.
