At a meeting in Beijing with Antony Blinken, Wang Yi noted that while the bilateral relationship had begun to stabilize, "negative factors keep cropping up." "The international community is watching whether China and the United States can steer international cooperation toward win-win results or confrontation," the Chinese foreign minister said, stressing that it will affect the whole world. According to the Chinese Communist Party mouthpiece Global Times, Wang said that the future of ties between the two countries will either be "stable development or a downward spiral." The response "will demonstrate the sincerity and capability of both sides," he added. The diplomat acknowledged "progress" since November, when Chinese and US leaders Xi Jinping and Joe Biden, respectively, met in person for the first time in years. But Wang warned the US against interfering in China's internal affairs or crossing Beijing's "red lines," in an apparent reference to Taiwan. On Tuesday, the US Congress approved an $8.1 billion military aid package for Taiwan, a move that angered China, which claims the island as its own. The same legislation requires Chinese company ByteDance to sell TikTok within 12 months or face a ban on the video-sharing platform in the United States. "China's legitimate development rights have been wantonly suppressed, and our core interests are being challenged," Wang said. According to the Global Times, Blinken stressed the importance of dialogue in the meeting and described the bilateral relationship as "the most consequential in the world." The US secretary of state pledged that Washington will be "clear and direct" about areas of disagreement and the country's position. On Thursday, Blinken met with the top official in China's financial hub of Shanghai, Communist Party Secretary Chen Jining, and "raised concerns about [Chinese] trade policies and non-market economic practices," the US State Department said in a statement. The secretary stressed that the US seeks healthy economic competition with China and "a level playing field for American workers and businesses operating" in the Asian country. China's multi-billion-dollar trade surplus with the US, along with accusations of intellectual property theft and other practices seen as discriminatory against American companies in China, have been a source of friction in bilateral relations.
