According to the French news agency AFP, the cancellations mainly affected short- and medium-haul flights. At Roissy Charles-de-Gaulle, many passengers walked through the international flight terminals, almost making people forget the thousands who were forced to stay home and reschedule their trips, during the French school holidays.

About 2,300 flights are scheduled to depart or arrive at French airports today, compared to almost 5,200 on Wednesday, according to the French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC) panel consulted by AFP.

In Europe, more than 2,000 flights have been cancelled and 1,000 are at risk of being diverted to avoid French airspace, according to the Airlines for Europe association.

In order to adapt traffic to the available staff, French civil aviation asked companies to cancel three out of four flights departing or arriving at Paris-Orly, the second largest French airport; 55% at Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle, the first; 65% at Marseille-Provence (south) and 45% at all other platforms in metropolitan France.

Most long-haul flights, however, escaped the cancellations, with the DGAC request applying only to planes making "three or more movements" during the day.

In Marseille, out of the 140 flights initially scheduled for today, 88 were reported as cancelled on the airport's website, including several flights to Algeria, Greece or Luxembourg.

These cancellations, on an unprecedented scale "for about 20 years", according to the head of Parisian airports, Augustin de Romanet, were imposed by the DGAC due to the number of strikers declared among essential air traffic controllers.
