The security services said that the metropolitan (archbishop) of the main monastery in Sviatohirsk was suspected of "informing" the Russians about "the locations of checkpoints of the Armed Forces of Ukraine" in the Kramatorsk district of the Donetsk region.
The head of the monastery is accused of having publicly mentioned the locations to his congregation "during a liturgy", the services said, without specifying the date of the events or explicitly naming Metropolitan Arseniy.
The Orthodox leader faces up to eight years in prison if convicted of "disclosing information about the movement or location of the Armed Forces".
The case involves a monastery run by the branch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church that was historically linked to Moscow, but which in May 2022 proclaimed its independence in response to Russian Patriarch Kirill's support for the Russian invasion.
According to the Ukrainian services, the monastery has been spreading separatist sentiment for years and relaying "pro-Kremlin messages".
The Donetsk region, which Moscow claims to have annexed and where the monastery is located, is one of the areas where fighting is particularly violent.
In the spring of 2022, during the first months of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Sviatohirsk monastery was damaged by Russian shelling.
