Man 'fishes' for objects that could help prove guilt in couple's death

The death of an elderly couple in 2015 has yet to be judged, with the first trial scheduled for next August. Now, a fisherman may have helped strengthen the accusation against the suspect, who allegedly lured the couple who were looking for a classic car.

A man has “hooked” some items that will bolster a murder case against a couple in Georgia. The case dates back to 2015 but has been delayed more than once, and is scheduled to begin again in August. According to CBS News , a man was magnet fishing in Telfair County on April 14 when he pulled up a shotgun. Two days later, the unidentified man returned to the same spot and “hooked” a purse that contained a cellphone, the victims’ driver’s licenses, and credit cards. The items were enough for authorities to obtain a search warrant for a Telfair County home, which police said helped them uncover additional evidence — the details of which have not been released. At issue is the death of Bud and Hune Runion, a couple who were robbed and killed in the area. According to authorities, the couple’s bodies and their car were discovered in three different locations. While it’s unclear if the murder weapon is the gun that was found, authorities said the caliber of the murder weapon matches the one that was recently “hooked.” The couple, from Atlanta, reportedly drove three hours to the location after being lured there by the suspect, Ronnie Adrian “Jay” Towns. The couple was looking for a classic car, and the suspect allegedly enticed the elderly couple by telling them he had a 1966 Mustang. “Jay” Towns’ first trial was delayed because of issues with the way the jury was selected, an issue that was resolved in 2019. The second trial was delayed because of COVID-19 after he pleaded not guilty. The suspect’s attorney did not immediately respond to CBS News for comment, but prosecutors welcomed the new evidence. “It was a good case already, but this makes it even better,” one of the prosecutors said, referring to the boost it gives the prosecution’s case.
