“Israel must make sure that all of this aid gets to the Palestinians in Gaza, without delay,” Biden said, referring to a $95 billion measure he signed into law at the White House on Thursday that includes military aid for Ukraine, Taiwan and Israel, including $1 billion in assistance for Gaza.
“We have to get humanitarian assistance to Gaza as quickly as possible. This legislation includes $1 billion in additional humanitarian assistance for Gaza. We’re going to make sure that gets there and that it is used to improve living conditions, with food, with medical supplies, with water, and Israel must make sure that this assistance reaches all the people in Gaza,” the US president said after signing the bill into law. The legislative package includes military aid for Israel and humanitarian assistance for civilians in conflict zones, including the Gaza Strip, who are facing starvation. Biden said the aid package for Gaza is meant to help “innocent people who are suffering terribly from the consequences of what Hamas has started,” referring to the Islamist group’s 7 October offensive against Israel, in which 1,200 people were killed and 230 others were kidnapped. While Biden has publicly pressured Israel to allow humanitarian aid into the enclave, the US leader has also reiterated his support for America’s top Middle East ally. “My commitment to Israel’s security remains ironclad,” the president said. Since the start of the conflict, more than 34,260 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip, and the number of wounded now exceeds 77,000, the vast majority of them women and children, according to the enclave’s Hamas-run health ministry.
