Tens of thousands of passengers will be without flights in France on Thursday despite the lifting of a strike announced today by the main air traffic controllers’ union, because of the impossibility of reversing airline cancellations.

"Despite the lifting of this pre-notice, the late conclusion of negotiations with the SNCTA [National Union of Air Traffic Controllers] and the need to finalize discussions with other unions will not prevent disruptions" on Thursday, the General Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGAC) said in a statement.

The DGAC said in a statement that it had asked airlines to reduce their flights to adapt available staff to traffic levels, which would amount to a 75% reduction at Paris' Orly airport, where three out of four flights would be canceled.

At the country's largest airport, Charles de Gaulle, also in the capital, a 55% reduction was requested, while in Marseille it was 65% and 45% at other airports.

Following the announcement of the deal with the union, which among other things demanded a salary increase, the DGAC will seek to limit the impact by implementing minimum services at its en-route air navigation centers and at airport air navigation services.

It also called "on passengers who are able to do so to postpone their trip and contact their airline to find out about the status of their flight" to find out whether their flights would be maintained.

Following the DGAC's request, Transavia, a low-cost airline belonging to the Air France-KLM group, announced the cancellation of 198 flights on Thursday.

Air France planned to update its schedules later in the day but warned that "significant cancellations and delays are to be expected," promising to notify its customers individually so that they could modify their trip free of charge or request refunds.

The SNCTA also withdrew its strike notice for May 9-11, which fell during one of the longest holiday weekends on the French calendar.

For French government spokeswoman Prisca Thevenot, the agreement with the SNCTA meant that "social dialogue is working."

Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete hailed the deal as a "win-win" situation for reforming air traffic control in France, which airlines have also been calling for amid growing traffic.

According to the Paris airport operator ADP, Roissy welcomed 203,000 passengers on Monday and Orly 111,000. The two airports account for about half of all passengers using French airports, at a time when air traffic is picking up but remains below summer levels.

During the Paris Olympics, which will take place from July 26 to August 11, the union has pledged not to strike over pay as part of an "Olympic truce" that was announced in September.
