A 52-year-old woman delivered her own grandson on Sunday night, after an ambulance took too long to arrive in Curitiba, Brazil.
The baby's father called the Mobile Emergency Service (Samu) to request an ambulance, as the woman was in labor, according to the Terra news portal.
Little Ravi was born about two hours after his 22-year-old mother went into labor. Due to the delay in the ambulance's arrival, the grandmother, Antonia Soares, did not hesitate to help. She spread a blanket on the sidewalk, placed a pillow under her daughter's head and got to work as a midwife.
"My son-in-law called Samu around 11:00 p.m. By midnight, Samu had not shown up. Nothing! I didn't want to see my daughter suffer," Antonia said, as quoted by the portal.
At the beginning of Monday morning, at 00:09, Ravi was born in his grandmother's arms.
It was only an hour later that the emergency medical services arrived at the scene, according to the young mother's family.
"It was no longer necessary. If they had to die, my daughter and my grandson would have died in my arms. When the ambulance arrived, the paramedic said: 'Oh my, he's already born!?'" Antonia revealed.
The newborn was then taken to the Evangelical Mackenzie University Hospital. The baby is in good health and should be discharged soon.
The incident occurred at a time when hospitals are overcrowded and there are delays in care at health units in Curitiba.
However, the Curitiba City Hall denies the delay in care, stating in a statement that "the ambulance was requested shortly after midnight" and "in less than 15 minutes" was already at the address.
