The disbursement follows the positive assessment by the European Commission of reforms in the areas of the judicial system, the fight against money laundering, public financial management, the business environment and agriculture, as well as reporting requirements, in order to ensure transparent and effective use of the funds.

In March, the EU sent the first instalment of the exceptional financial assistance, of €4.5 billion, which, with the amount released today, totals six billion euros, under the Ukraine Mechanism, also approved in March.

A general precondition for support under the mechanism is respect for effective democratic mechanisms.

According to data from Brussels, since the Russian invasion on 24 February 2022, the EU has already supported Kiev with €98.5 billion.

The Russian military offensive in Ukrainian territory plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).

In mid-December 2023, the European Council decided to open formal EU accession negotiations with Ukraine.

Ukraine has had EU candidate country status since mid-2022.
